He had to arrive to complete (at least for now) the family, which is already starting to grow.
This is Viña Atea, the new village wine from Las Pizarras.
Of course, it shares DNA with the rest of the wines in the collection, deeply marked by garnacha.
A variety that in Calatayud learns to live among altitude, wind, cold, slopes, and soils that give nothing away. And precisely because of that, it develops such a strong personality. A very Aragonese personality. Obviously.
But the youngest member of the family, the newcomer, lands with its own style.
Viña Atea is born from vineyards cultivated at 990 meters of altitude, in one of the highest and most discreet corners of Calatayud. There, you need a jacket even on the nights of the scorching summer days.
That coolness forces the vine to take things slowly: ripen without rush, endure whatever comes, and find its balance in its own way.
The result is a distinct garnacha within the collection. More precise, if anything. Fresher. More restrained. One of those that doesn’t need to raise its voice to be noticed. Why would it? It tells you everything in the first sip.
The vines, over 40 years old, grow on gray slate and work with controlled yields, resulting in a wine where the fruit appears clean, freshness sets the pace, and the landscape sneaks into every glass.
Altitude, patience, and garnacha being garnacha.
A new village to keep telling the story of Calatayud
With Viña Atea, we continue expanding our way of understanding Las Pizarras: interpreting Calatayud from each village, each soil, and each vineyard.
Because here nothing is uniform.
The slates change. The altitude changes. The orientation changes. And the way Garnacha responds to all that changes.
That’s why each wine in the collection has its own personality.
And now Viña Atea joins in.
