Let’s enjoy the hidden value of Spanish Wines

AT THE BEGINNING, THERE WAS ONE THING WE KNEW FOR SURE…

We started during a time of crisis… – everything that could have gone wrong.. did!

Yet a single belief has united us today, Spain is the country with the greatest wealth of terroirs for making wine, the strongest identity and, paradoxically, the most undervalued production. So our path started to be traced: Let us share with you the hidden wonder of Spanish wines.

MARK SCHIETTEKAT
Owner

“I am the eldest of four and I got involved in wine by accident after trying a sunny Spanish bottle for an amazing price in 1983. I started as a small, local wine merchant in a garage and we always kept on growing. When passion is the driver, growing never feels like hard  work. I have always been drawn to authenticity, which is so much present in unique wines. Grape varieties, regions, roots, toasting of the barrels, the opinions and choices of winemakers and agronomists.”

Mark started producing wines for his clients from 2000 on, and decided to create Bodegas RAICES IBERICAS in 2020 in response to the widely shared idea about Spanish wines: Spain has the greatest and most exciting potential for development.

  • Largest vineyard area worldwide
  • Old and high altitude vineyards
  • Indigenous grape varieties
  • Ideal for organic production

Based in Calatayud within its own winery of Maluenda, the company manages the production, marketing and commercialization of its different projects mainly sourced from the Zaragoza to the Cuenca area.

CARLOS RUBÉN MAGALLANES
Winemaker

I was born in Ponferrade, in the province of Leon, as the youngest of three brothers and people have called me by my middle name, Rubén, my entire life.

After my studies I first worked in Rueda before returning to my home region to make Mencia wines, another powerhouse grape, and I ended up in Bodegas San Alejandro in Calatayud in 1997. This is where I met Mark for the first time, the start of something beautiful.

The challenge was massive, Calatayud was insignificant in the global wine market at the time, but we were able to change that.

Until 2015, I was San Alejandro’s winemaker and in between I had the opportunity to make wines at, among others, Santa Rita in Chile and at Bodegas Salentein in Argentina. The kind of experiences that broaden one’s horizon. And, of course, I took a lot of trips with Mark, across Spain, blending wines in Argentina, in South Africa, to Austria, to Italy and France.

¡Adelante, aquí llega Carlos Rubén!
