Recognized as of Spanish origin, it is a mutation of red Garnacha. It is generally found in the northeast of the Iberian Peninsula and in the French Pyrenees. It grows abundantly in the regions of Tarragona, Zaragoza, and Teruel and is the main grape variety in the denominations of Alella, Costers del Segre, Tarragona, and Terra Alta.
