Mencía is mainly grown in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula since the time of Ancient Rome. After recovering from the devastation of the late 19th-century phylloxera epidemic, which caused a severe economic crisis in its traditional growing areas, it is used to produce aromatic and fruity wines, with intense color and aging potential.
