Mencia has been mainly grown in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula since the time of Ancient Rome. After recovering from the disaster of the phylloxera epidemic at the end of the 19th century, which caused a serious economic crisis in its traditional growing areas, it is used to make aromatic and fruity wines, with an intense color, and with the possibility of aging.
